Altruism Australia believes leaders must be people and organisations that adopt and seek to demonstrate:
Vision – The ability to see the big picture and the merit in encouraging and supporting the creative process and imagination in their own lives and the lives of those around them.
Total commitment – A passion for their vision & the people around them to make it reality; the open show of support and loyalty.
Wisdom – ‘“…expertise in the fundamental pragmatics of life permitting exceptional insight and judgment involving complex and uncertain matters of the human condition” (Baltes & Staudinger, 1993). “
Courage – A willingness to take risks and encourage an environment of fortitude.
Humility – A keenness to acknowledge the efforts of others. The creation of an environment for others to excel and be freely acknowledged for their achievements.
Confidence – Positivity, certainty and strong self-belief knowing this provides solid assurances.
Economic and financial responsibility – Valuing and being totally committed to economic and financial accountability and honesty. There is also a generosity of spirit in seeking to share economic resources and successes.
Community – Inclusiveness. This is the knowledge that individuals and organisations work most effectively when everyone is involved in some way. There is a desire to transcend person difference and conflicts are openly dealt with, not avoided. Friendships and relationships are supported and encouraged.
Integrity – There can be no real leadership without integrity. This demands of leadership a sincere willingness and devotion to honesty, accountability, honour and highly principled behaviour.
Altruism – A sense of responsibility to proactively act in a manner that clearly demonstrates a care and service to all life.
Self-awareness – The knowledge that understanding the self and our own personal motives, needs, prejudices, fears, dreams, passions and likes is critical so we sincerely seek to eliminate the potential to fulfil our own ego. Such leaders embrace personal growth and development in themselves and others.
Inspires others – A delight in finding the passions of others and doing their utmost to inspire and support this passion.
Joy – Creating an atmosphere of happiness, good-natured humour and laughter, are hallmarks of intelligent and confident leadership.
A deep understanding that ethical practices, psychological and spiritual health are absolutely imperative if life, all life, is to be dignified and given the best chance to reach its undoubted brilliant and magnificent potential.
We seek to help dismantle the popular beliefs that leadership is synonymous with survival of the fittest, most aggressive, wealthiest, most powerful, most charismatic / attractive, most opportunistic, idea that making hard decisions that hurt, damage and even destroy people and organisations is strength , most cunning.
It is disappointing, even alarming that there is a growing cynicism toward leadership, especially the most influential leaders of our nation and globally. This cynicism has identified a growing acceptance that leadership is often accompanied by arrogance, exclusivity, secretiveness, flagrant dishonesty, greed, profound manipulation through the use of ‘spin-doctoring', divisiveness, self-servingness, disregard for others unless they are useful, self-aggrandising, abusive & bullying behaviour and even using natural gifts such as attractiveness, eloquence, personal charisma or charm to manipulate others to their own ends.
It is included in the charter of Altruism Australia to deliver leadership programs that will help provide, through education, the Australian community with leaders of the highest ability, integrity and psychological, emotional & spiritual health.
